A couple of years ago I planted some Catawissa Onions, a variety of "walking" onions that were developed in the 1880s by a horticulturist in Catawissa, PA (a small village of abt 2500 people in north-central PA). Incidentally, my wife is from Catawissa and leaves this Friday to visit her relatives there for some r&r after the 2007 tax season.
Walking onions grow tall stalks that are crowned by a bunch of bulblets. The weight of the bulblets bends the stalk over and whenever a bulblet touches the ground it takes root. Hence, the appearance of walking across the garden.
Catawissa Onions are different in that they form the crown of bulblets, then a second tier of bulblets form on the tendrils from the crown.
