Easter egg info desired

by Bob Henrick » Wed Apr 04, 2007 12:37 pm

Ok, Easter is this coming Sunday, and I have two small grandchildren. We will do 2-3 dozen eggs to hide in the grass for the kids pleasure, but I have a question. How does one boil eggs without the shell cracking? I am told that one can pierce the large end of the egg with a needle without breaking it. This lets the air out of the air sac within which is designed to act as a shock absorber Another way, or so I am told, is to put the eggs in a pot of cold water and bring to a rolling boil, then set the pot off the heat source and leave the lid on for 20 minutes. So, how do you do it?

As you said:
Put eggs in a large pot, in a single layer and cover with COLD water. Turn on the heat under the eggs and as soon as they come to a full boil, remove them from the heat and let them sit in the hot water for about 15-20 minutes.
Works fine for me.

Since we're expecting snow this weekend I'm not coloring the eggs. Just leave them white and hide them in the drifts.

Maybe Bob is trying to be ecumenical and is calling them Esther eggs? I don't know. A little editing on Bob's part could enlighten us.

Darn! I was really hoping we were talking about Esther eggs. I was looking forward to a new tradition.

When I was doing this, I gave up on real eggs. I used plastic eggs, the kind you can put something into. If the kids wanted to dye eggs, I helped them and we made a great centerpiece for the Easter table with them. I used to put coins in the plastic eggs, along with candy pieces. As they got older, it was tickets to a show, a day alone with dad, that type of thing. Now we have children's hunt and adult hunt. The adult hunt is much more fun, and the competition is great. They still hunt plastic eggs and the fun part is seeing them all sit down after the hunt to count their coin, and other goodies included.

We found that the animals ate the real eggs, they got rained on overnight, wind blew them away, etc.

We're dreaming of a white Easter too. So guess we'll just leave 'em white. Wait a minute, we only have brown eggs around here!

But, please, after a week or two of letting them sit around being admired, just throw the eggs away. Don't eat them!

Even if you come from a thrifty background.

[ And, yes, there's a story behind this warning. It starts with my thrifty Yankee husband and a basket of three-week-old colored eggs. It ends passed out on the bathroom floor, late-late-night phone calls, etc. :o ]

Bob,

I suffer, frequently, from the same affliction.
