Yesterday I woke up ravenous and by mid-morning I was having a powerful craving for a cheeseburger (I like them, but don't usually crave one).
I had a doctor's appt at 10:30 am and when I left his office, I spied a McDonald's nearby. To satisfy my craving, I ordered a green chile double cheeseburger.
(Pre-emptive disclaimer: I had to get back to my office asap and there are no other restaurants on the route back.)
The burger went down in record time and filled the hole in my wooden leg, but the craving remained. What I had eaten was not my idea of a cheeseburger. What I got was a pasteburger that had been steamed (microwaved) with a bun that blended into the meat with no sharp line of demarcation.
When will I ever learn? I understand McD's burgers are now delivered cooked and frozen. Then the whole assembly is microwaved. Once upon a time, they were grilled on the spot.
What I was really craving were the burgers I used to cook at the fair: grilled so the outside surfaces are slightly charred and the bun surfaces toasted on the grill. Lots of snap, texture (more coarsely ground meat), and flavor. Mmmm, mmmm.
