What is everyone's most wine friendly food?

by Maria Samms » Tue Mar 20, 2007 6:08 pm

I know we always talk about food friendly wine, but I was wondering if anyone had a food that they thought most wines go with?

I find that grilled salmon tastes great with almost any wine...red/white/rose...dry or off-dry, oaky or acidic.

So what are your most wine friendly food?

Roasted meats are pretty wine friendly, especially lamb. Roasted lamb is great with all the best red wines in the world. Grilled meats like salmon or beef are a close second. Someone could persuade me to go the other way. I am feeling like roasted lamb tonight though (thanks Doris!).

Good fish prepared very simple and grilled. Chicken is a tie with the fish. Pork, simply prepared is also great. Then there's pasta......hmmmmm.
Guess I don't have too much of a problem doing wine and food. I'm not that fussy about it.

Wild mushrooms. And they can go white or red, depending on the prep.

When I think about this post, I think about something that can be prepared a variety of ways. Then all I can think of is Bubba's shrimp monologue in "Forest Gump". So, it all depends on how something is prepared, but I have to agree with a few other posts here - chicken.

1. Roast chicken.
2. Wild mushrooms.
3. Salmon.
4. Rare bison.

Pretty much in that order.

For some reason I LOVE having an ice pop with a glass of wine. I do it almost every night.

Aside from that, I like a spicy chili with an overly fruity wine.
I can certainly see that you know your wine. Most of the guests who stay here wouldn't know the difference between Bordeaux and Claret.

My husband doesn't drink wine with every meal, but I do, so I frequently enjoy one bottle of wine over several evenings. Needless to say, I'm much more tolerant at home for the less-than-ultimate pairing, than I am in a restaurant.

I agree with you, Maria, that grilled salmon is quite versatile in what wines complement it. I've had it with Merlot, Cabernet, Chianti, Chardonnay, and probably a host of others, and never had a moment of thinking "Oh, this is an awful match." Same with roast chicken, as Jenise mentioned, and most pasta dishes. I also think fresh pork (depending on the sauce) will go with most any wine.

Good choice, Stuart. I like wild mushroom risotto - as using a bit more cheese and olive oil than usual will suit the dish and will make it suitable for tannic, young reds.

I don't drink wine because of religious reasons ... only for other reasons.

Have to agree with Jenise on roast chicken or the mushroom guys if you are talking about all wine.

There are many other things that go with all red wine or all white wine.

The Stupids do our best to make any dish unhealthy. It's part of who we are.

One little trick we do for rissoti (risottos? risottae?) to match Cabernet-based wines, especially Bordeaux- a subliminal dose of saffron in the broth. For whatever reason, it just smooths out the seams.

It's amazing how well right-bank Bordeaux goes with white-fleshed fish and chicken. Whites and Roses are easy too.
