Your favorite hangover food?

by Jenise » Sat Jan 10, 2026 3:07 pm

And no I'm not "asking for a friend"!

It came up in a conversation with friends yesterday while we spent four hours making meat loaf sandwiches. This particular friend is super sweet but doesn't have what you'd call an analytical mind, and she has this annoying habit of spouting sentences out of nowhere that start with "They say...." Who her 'they' is is never clear but whatever she shares this way is always presented as gospel truth. Out of nowhere she announced, "They say menudo is good for hangovers."

I laughed, couldn't help it , then opined that AFAIK it's merely a tradition among certain cultures where, I'm guessing, hot and fragrant menudo would be easily available in early morning stores and stalls at a time of day when a hot meal, with some protein, would be restorative. In the L.A. of my childhood, I remember the Menudo signs on food trucks parked outside some bars at the poor, largely hispanic, end of town.

But speaking of Mexican food, my once-favorite hangover cure, and I admit this without shame, was canned Gebhardts tamales. The appeal was probably simplicity--open can, heat--and they were good. I have no 'go to' these days and fortunately rarely need such a remedy, and if I did I'm more likely to reach for an apple. But were Gebhardts still around, there'd probably be a can in my pantry just in case.

What's your morning-after fix for overdoing it?

I’ve only ever had two notable hangovers in my life. In both cases I went back to bed.

I'd have to confirm this with someone who's actually Mexican, but what I've always heard is that menudo is considered to be a good hangover cure, which is why it's often served only on Saturdays and Sundays at many Mexican restaurants.

I've not had a real hangover in quite a few decades, but back when I did get them, I couldn't even think of eating anything and couldn't keep it down if I tried. Lots of people seem to like a big greasy breakfast, but even the thought of that would have had me running for the bathroom.

!! Wow. Remarkable restraint.

It was almost poetic that I had my first hangover the day after graduating from college. As if my body had aged overnight!

These days, I don't do the same excessive drinking that leads to crushing hangovers. But, any big wine dinner will leave me quite groggy and weak the next day, which qualifies for me as a hangover for this age.

As far as Jenise's original question, I'm not sure any foods ever cured my hangovers. It has always just been about time, sleep, hydration, sweating, etc. But, I think the general principle across cultures is rich salty food? Also soups.

Hands down, green chile stew. I won't go near menudo.

Rahsaan said "any big wine dinner will leave me quite groggy and weak the next day, which qualifies for me as a hangover for this age" and that's really what I was talking about. I doubt any of us abuse ourselves into the "crushing" area of our early days that Mike spoke of. For me, even a mild headache or complete lack of ambition qualifies as a hangover. :)

I believe it's also part of Filipino culture. But as I said to my friend yesterday, if it works then a pho or any combination of broth+protein would do the same good.

Most of the time my go-to is a glass of water, occasionally decorated with ibuprofen. I never understood those 'hair of the dog' recommendations. Once in a while, buttered toast is OK.

But I'm with the rest of the grownups: no drinky from the Old Wilkins bottle no more so hangovers are really kinda slow-overs.

We used to have a bottle for lab ethanol labeled "Old Wilkins: a combination of battery acid and embalming fluid not to be drunk by pregnant women who wish to remain that way"

I probably won't make any friends when I mention that I've never had a hangover. In fact, I've only gotten sick from alcohol 2-3 times and never in the past 30 years. Just lucky to have a bionic liver, I guess.

You are lucky! I remember my first very clearly. I was 19, and had been to my first office Xmas party on Christmas Eve. I was the only employee under-age, but I looked 25 so no one questioned it. I had zero affection for any type of alcohol, not even wine, but weaned on the maraschino cherries in my father's before-dinner Manhattans when dining out, I ordered one. Over the course of the afternoon I had at least three, maybe four. And I was due at my father's house that night.

Afterward, I somehow managed to drive the 20 miles home to my apartment and fight off the Manager of Piping Design who followed me with full rape intentions, slept a few hours, then showed up at my father's looking pretty grim. Dad was amused, and immediately prescribed some "hair of the dog", which was creme de menthe and soda. Which made me sicker. MUCH sicker.

Nearly an entire lifetime would pass before I would even taste another Manhattan, and in fact I now like them, but creme de menthe? NEVER EVER EVER AGAIN.

I feel the same way about Pepto-Bismol.

I had maybe four or five in college and a couple later on. I think the last one was in the early '90's. when I went on a ski trip with a lawyer friend who represented the ski resort. Everything was comp'd, so we went up expecting to have a good time. The plan was to ski all day, then go to the high-end restaurant and have an alcohol-sodden meal. Things quickly went off the rails, though, when we got to the resort and it was raining. Can't really ski in the rain, so we sat in the lodge and my friends decided that rounds of Ouzo would be appropriate for whiling away the afternoon. There were a bunch of rounds of Ouzo. And then we went to the restaurant, started with Champagne, then had several bottles of wine (it was all free!), and then after dinner drinks. I woke up around 5 AM and was hugging the toilet for quite a while. One of my friends picked up some (yes!) Pepto-bismol, and that helped a little. Fortunately, it had gotten colder overnight and it was snowing that morning. Around 10, I put on my ski gear, shakily ventured out, and found that the cold air and a little physical exertion had me feeling better in no time.

It's perhaps not entirely fair, given what all we drank, but the Ouzo got the blame for the hangover. I can choke a little of it down now, but for a long time I couldn't even smell it without feeling queasy.

You mean you feel exactly the same the next day regardless of whether you had anything alcoholic to drink?

Yup, pretty much. I've woken up dehydrated and in need of water numerous times, but feel right as rain when I wake up. Either that, or I'm permanently hung over so never notice any difference

ETA: Case in point: that dinner at Cesar ca 2005 with you, maybe Steve E, and Max Hauser where Max brought a bottle of Absinthe for us all to try. That was about as much alcohol as I've put into my system in quite some time and I recall tottering back to our rental home in N Berkeley. Next morning I felt fine.

Impressive. I won't feel it if I stick to just a few glasses. But once I go beyond that, I'll feel various forms of fatigue or weakness the next day, even if not headachey hangover. Definitely noticeable decline in sports performance the next day, even if slight.

I have no memory of that absinthe. But I do remember talking to you outside on Shattuck!
