Mama Lil's pickled peppers

by Karen/NoCA » Mon Nov 03, 2025 12:24 pm

For Jenise, the peppers arrived a few days ago. They are great and I have used them on three different recipes so far. They were great, chopped up and put into my weekend meatloaf, with a bit of the oil. I tossed them as a garnish on top of herby roasted red potatoes, and used some in a veggie dish. All good, thanks again!

Aren't they delicious? So uniquely flavored. They make a great potato salad and are fabulous as a marinade for cooked shrimp, though as I mentioned previously a spoonful in the hollow of an avocado half makes a great lunch salad.

Well, my peppers never arrived, and yesterday I got a text from Amazon that my order was cancelled. So, I went on a search for another way to buy, and I can't recall if it was Moma Lill's website or Walmart that wanted $44 for one small bottle. I ended up back on Amazon, which offered a pack of four with the gold top for $50 + and almost $13 for shipping. Yes, I bought them because I have found so many great ways to use them and the oil they are in. I wonder what is going on with them?? Amazon offered no reason for the cancelled order.

Karen, $13 for shipping is actually quite reasonable. I paid $16 to send you just the one bottle!

But Amazon's just an aggregator on a lot of things. They don't have this in their warehouses, they're just letting some other vendor sell thru them. Btw, you can buy from Mama Lil's direct, I provided that link in one of the discussions we've had here. I just re-ordered my favorite short grain rice, for instance. It came from some Asian market in Rosemead, California, not an Amazon warehouse.

Jenise, I am well aware of how Amazon works, and have been a customer since they opened as a bookstore. In fact, about 5 minutes from our house, Amazon is building a huge distribution facility. Redding offered them a deal they could not refuse. I found out that the one jar I ordered from Amazon that was cancelled was due to availability. Strange, because I reordered a pack of four, and they are arriving soon.?? I suspect from another distributor. Anyway, all is good, and I am so happy you sent me that jar. Funny thing is, Amazon says I ordered that product a few years ago, another version than the gold top. I have no recollection of that.

My four jars of Moma Lil's peppers finally arrived yesterday. Jenise alerted me to get the jar with the gold top lid, which I made sure to do. So I opened the box, and the lids were black. Looking at the labels and ingredients, they are the same as the one with the gold cap. My question is: does the marketing of lid colors have anything to do with the product itself, and if so, why would these have come with the black lid?

So, I did a little research and here is what I found:
Brand Evolution: Moma Lil's, like many small-batch producers, might be transitioning to more readily available, standard canning lids.
What to Do:
Check the Seal: Press the center of the lid down; if it doesn't flex or "pop," it's sealed.
Enjoy! The important thing is the peppers inside. If they're tasty and sealed, they're perfect.
Contact Moma Lil's (Optional): If you're curious, a quick message to their customer service might confirm they're just using different lids now.

Karen, here from Mama Lil's own website is a picture showing the gold lid being the mild peppers in oil. The black lids are sweet peppers in brine and hot peppers in oil. If they ever bottle them differently, which they might, I don't know, but what I've just described are the different versions available.

I checked my pepper labels again, and the ingredients, black, is the same as the gold-lidded. Taste is the same, etc. I suspect that since they came in a pack of four may have had something to do with it, or they just went to an available lid. Just had the new peppers today in a tortilla with peppers, cheese, and tomato...delicious.

Here is the answer to my question submitted to moma lil's:
Mama Lil's

Hi Karen!

Wanted to catch you before the weekend so you weren't guessing about the peppers.

You have a good eye! The jar with the gold lid is our signature Mama Lil's Peppers jar. We've replaced the gold lid for a black one for all of our jars. We haven't replaced the pictures on the website yet to reflect that.

So in summary, they are the same good ol' Mama Lil's Peppers you were looking for!

Have a good weekend,
-The Mama Lil's Team

Nice to hear, Karen. Customer response like that is what being a small, independent, family owned business should be about.

I assume that the label must say which variety of peppers the jar contains (hot vs. mild)?

This thread got me interested in these peppers but Amazon.ca doesn't list any and they may be hard to find up here in the Great White North. I shall look though.

I'm having guests over today for some wine and nibbles and one of the nibbles will be fried and salted Shishito peppers. Hopefully not too risky (pretty sure I've done these for Jenise) but one in every dozen or two peppers has an elevated heat level which makes eating them a mild form of Russian roulette.

Interesting, Bill. We've had that "Russian roulette" experience with Padron peppers here, and it's been pretty extreme. One of every ten or so is really hot (or at least it is for me). We've found the Shishitos to be quite a bit safer, with reliably mild heat and really good flavor, Hope no one gets a hot one and loses their ability to taste the wine!

My bad, Paul, sorry. All I did was insert my message after yours, didn't realize it at the time. It's fixed now.
