Grams to tablespoons/cups?

by Jenise » Fri Mar 14, 2025 11:53 am

I need to know how to measure 17 grams.

One of Bob's medicines came from hospice in a 500-something bottle and I'm to dissolve 17 grams of it into 8 ounces of water.

I forget whether you are a coffee drinker? People who are coffee geeks will have a teeny and sensitive scale next to the espresso machine. Having one at home is not out of the question if you make European recipes often.

I am a coffee drinker but not, about coffee or anything else, a precise measurer. One heaping tablespoon of grounds per Bodum French Press mug is all I need to know. Thanks for the measurement.

The gram is a measure of mass or weight. Tablespoons and cups are measures of volume. To convert from one to the other you must know the density (mass per unit volume, aka specific gravity) of the substance being measured.

I suggest asking your pharmacist.

Jenise, the guys are right that density does factor in, but an equivalent that should be very close for your purposes is that 17 g = 1 tablespoon.

Which is about the same as a coffee scoop, which measures 1-1/2 Tbs.

I agree with Paul on the weight vs volume thing. But I'm surprised you apparently don't have a kitchen scale to measure the meds.

It broke and I haven't replaced it. But hey, most people getting this stuff probably don't even have a broken one. And all this stuff came from a local pharmacy who would know that.

I hear you. Pretty crazy mixing measurements, though. Good thing they didn't use the older grains, scruples, and drams.

Amazon US has digital kitchen scales for $15 and under that can measure grams.

( I have one, but the this side of the pond we use weight, not the mysterious cup, in recipes)

No idea what an ounce of water is - grams and ounces? bit weird. Surely should be all metric or all not.

The term "ounce" has another problem. Just "ounce" is a measure of weight (16 oz = 1 pound). But there is also "fluid ounce" which is a volume measure (8 fl oz = 1 cup). One fl oz of water is 29.57 ml and has a mass of 29.57 grams. One oz (weight) of water is 28.35 grams and has a volume of 28.35 ml.

In the US, "ounce" usually means "fluid ounce" when measuring liquids and "weight ounce" when measuring solids.

And let's not get into drams, grains, and scruples.

You are speaking to a retired barrister and solicitor - I have been known to indulge in more than the odd dram and made a living trying to rescue those without scruples!

Oh, Heavens to Betsy! Not the Mysterious Cup!

I thought that went out with the Inquisition. (I didn't expect....)

It's so easy, anyway: there's teacup, coffee cup, soup cup, measuring cup, and Cup O'Noodles.

Jenise, if you can tell me what the medication is (either here or by PM) I can determine the volume quantity from its density. More generally, most crystalline organic compounds will have a density of 4-4.5 g/tsp, so I'd guesstimate 4 tsp of it would weigh roughly 17 g. To be any more precise, I'd need to know what the substance in question is.

Mark, it's Miralax which Bob requires now. But it turns out that the lid is supposed to be the measuring device (not that the bottle indicated this, it didn't.)

Well, you've got a solution now (no pun intended), but FTR the answer is 3 tsp (Miralax is polyethylene glycol, a polymer with a density of 1.125 g/ml)

Thanks, that's about what the lid holds! How insane is it for the manufacturer to include the measurer but not mention it in the directions?
