My Three Sons Gourmet pimento cheese

by Karen/NoCA » Sun Dec 08, 2024 12:30 pm

I discovered this at our local grocer, which is famous for its cheese and meat section. This season, they are carrying this delicious cheese spread. They also have a Spicy Jalapeno version. This is a women-owned company headed up by a former orthodontist. The product comes out of Greensboro, NC. Is anyone else familiar with it?

I grew up outside Greensboro, but left decades before this product. As a Southern boy I have a soft spot for pimento cheese. I've had a few "gourmet" versions (at New Southern places like Crooks Corner ) but it's hard to go wrong with cheddar, mayo, and pimento.
I actually haven't had pimento cheese in years, but looks like only NY market with this isn't near me.

Pimentos belong in olives, not cheese!

Pimento cheese is something I've been aware of from a distance, but only experienced about four years for the first time, at Sean Brock's Nashville resto (Husk?) And I absolutely loved it, but it was very dry and cheddary, by dry I mean the mayo was undetectable, and it was very--oh, what's the spicy green pepper, hotter and smaller than jalapeno starts with an 's' but name escapes me at the moment--spicy, and was served with housemade flatbread broken into shards. In combination, a spectacular appetizer that we shared with the strangers at the table next to us, a fun night. The few I've had since were more about mayo than cheese--large shreds of cheddar stirred into a mayo dressing or even Velveeta-ish--and that's a hard no for me. So many ways to do it!
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Serrano?
Yes, there are some versions that are sadly lacking in cheddar-ness!

I came here to say that ...

Pimento cheese is very popular around here, although for some reason - maybe Louisville's communal aversion to being thought of as in The South - I think of it more as an item in the panoply of Derby Season dishes than a Southern dish. Plus it's a perfectly good year-round sandwich ingredient or dip. Keep the cheddar grated coarsely and go lightish on the mayo and it's hard to go wrong. It's so easy to make it well at home, there's very little motivation to buy jarred brands.

Yes, serrano! Thank you. All I could think of was 'Sorrento' but know that's a Hyundai, not a pepper. Oh, and I remember now that the cheddar involved had been smoked. That upped the game a lot, too.

Speaking of cheddars, not to go off course, but last week at Bill's we had a new-to-us fantastic English cheese called Red Fox. It may or may not be a brand name for a specific Red Leicestershire (properly pronounced just 'Lester') but better than any Red Leicestershire that I've had previously. Sharp, but smoother and tangier (or so memory tells me).

Would make a killer Pimiento Cheese.

Sorrento is also the name of THE POCONOS OLDEST WINERY, an award-winning winery. I watched a fun movie about them a long time ago.

I don't think we should have all this talk about Sorrento without paying homage to the original: the beautiful city on the Amalfi Coast near Naples, and Torna a Surriento, the song that Sorrento made famous. 8)
