Coffee: alternatives to fresh brew

by Jenise » Mon Nov 11, 2024 12:57 pm

I am sipping a cup of Steeped brand coffee, made from coffee bags that work like tea bags that were provided at a hotel we stayed in recently. I was so impressed I brought an extra home.

Is it as good as the French press coffee from ideal quality beans I import from Ventura, California, for my daily cuppa? No, not even close. But it's as good or better than most of the Keurig options without the machine or the plastic waste. All you need is hot water.

Ditto for cold brew concentrates. Yesterday I purchased a bottle of Stumptown cold brew to try out. Stumptown is a legendary coffee roastery out of Portland. I used to seek out their beans exclusively, preferring them over local options until I found a really good local option at $10/lb vs. Stumptown's $17/12 oz, and that get me by in between infusions from Ventura (like the Cigare Volant blend selected by Randall Graham I just took delivery on). We have a lot of local roasters, but most are med-dark or dark roasts where I like medium or even medium-light.

And I still love my French press--haven't given up on that. I only need to consider other/quicker options that Bob can self-serve. In the meantime, this bag thing is an impressive evolution from instant coffee out of a jar, though expensive. I just googled Steeped to find out how much, and this brand retails from restaurant supply for about $1 ea when purchased by the 100 ct case. They're $1.50 plus when purchased at regular retail. And Whole Foods has their own brand for around $1 ea in ten packs.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Josh Raynolds used to advocate for Sightglass instant coffee: https://sightglasscoffee.com/ He could make a cup almost anywhere and it was decent. I have a package and it is good, for instant coffee.

Strangely, when I'm traveling in Italy, I am fine with Lavazza or Nescafe to get me moving in the morning.

I've always found anything but fresh coffee to be a rung or two below the real thing, but I understand your need for a non-hazardous and quick and easy way to make a cup. We only do drip or espresso, the first in the morning or for company and the latter for quiet music listening and reading in the living room in the afternoons (alternating with a selection of Chinese and Indian teas).

Hadn't heard of Steeped - is it just instant in a bag, or....?

PS - thought for the day:
