Mail order seafood

by John F » Fri Sep 06, 2024 10:58 am

I have been interested in eating more fish and since I have had that thought in my head the internet gods have been pelting me with ads.

I get many ads for Alaskan Seafood company mail order…. Has anyone tried them? Thoughts? Other good on line seafood shippers? We just sold our house in Nantucket after 30 years there so great seafood is no longer at my fingertips like it has been

Some friends of ours this summer were swearing by the burgers they order online from Lobells….we never have really tried the online shipping for things like this

Thanks in advance

John, I live in NYC so it has been a very long time since I didn't have a good fish store and a good butcher nearby.

My mother used to buy from Omaha Steaks but I've since tasted them and... no. Flannery's stuff is good, though I buy cuts and not burger meat.

I cannot remember the last time I bought fish or seafood online. A thousand years ago, or so -- 1980s -- I worked next door to a shipper who specialized in canned lobster. Twice a year they had a sale and I bought. Stuff was terrific, loved it.

I have friends who buy from Goldbelly (&c.) and they are happy but that may only be restaurants(?).

Like Jeff, I have plenty of access to good fishmongers, so don't do online. But if you are buying things like tuna (typically frozen at sea) and shrimp (the one thing I usually buy frozen) there is no reason that quality shouldn't be topnotch. I'd be a bit less confident about delicate things like sole being frozen, but I'd think you'd be safe with a place like Citarella or Browne's Trading (never ordered, but have shopped at each in person). If I didn't have access, I'd probably place test orders with Alaskan Seafood and Fulton St Market (I get their ads online a lot).
Oh, I guess techically I do order seafood, a couple of times a year I get sustainable American caviar from Kelley's Katch.

Like Jeff again, I do order steaks (and lamb) from Flannery a couple of times a year. And have been happy with a couple orders of hard to get cuts from Wild Fork (who has seafood come to think of it, never tried). Lobel's I'm sure is great (and likely pretty pricey).

As to Goldbelly, that is generally mostly prepared stuff from well-known restaurants, but they have the process down pat. I've used for gifts seveal times, seamless. And have gone to friends who had the Zahav lamb package, great.

So a long way to say "no, don't know anyone who has used Alaskan Seafood" :)

Pretty much like everyone else: haven't ordered frozen seafood (just fresh lobster from New England). I really don't like fish that's been frozen--freezing alters the texture in a way that's wholly unsatisfactory to me. Even salmon I caught myself in Alaska and supervised the professional freezing of tasted fishy to me when unthawed later. For those reasons, I would not mail-order fish. I live among a lot of people who catch their own halibut and salmon and are perfectly okay with it. I've been given some and the only way we found it edible was heavy seasoning for a taco filling.

Scallops and shrimp survive well, though. And for meats, yes yes yes on Flannery.

Where do you live? Are there not even lake or river fish options? (Admittedly not as exciting as ocean creatures, but the freshness may mitigate those downsides)

Living in Vancouver, we have a vast array of international food available readily so mail order except for things like oddball spices you can't find doesn't happen.

Jenise, I'm going to disagree with something you said, in a minor way. Ocean caught tuna at hard (very hard) frozen at sea and I've had the opportunity to compare with fresh caught in Hawaii and found no detectable loss in flavour or texture with the commercially caught fish. Can't say that for anything but tuna as I don't have the necessary experience to compare.

Yeah, I guess you are just a bit further out from the ocean. When we lived in Chapel Hill, there were people who would come with great fresh ocean fish/crabs, but perhaps less so in your mountains!

I've used Pure Food Fish Market in Seattle's Pike Place Market (https://www.freshseafood.com/). I've bought whole salmons and other things. Interesting, it's right beside the place that likes to throw the fish around.

I have also bought frozen fish from Rogers Fish Company (https://www.rogersfishco.com/) for a fish loving relative banished to a land locked area. She reported that the fish was excellent. This is the company that Roger Berkowitz started after he sold Legal Seafood.
