Chili Crisp

by Karen/NoCA » Sun Aug 11, 2024 11:41 am

I just finished a jar of Laoganma Spicy Crisp and while I like it I'm wondering if there are better ones on the market. This one has MSG in it which I usually stay away from. Does anyone have a favorite?
Well, I just read that Serous Eats has rated this one as a top-of-the-line Chili Crisp in its category. Guess I will stick with it. I did find a highly-rated one with no MSG but reviewers said it has
little crisps and since that is what I like...

Yeah, the Laoganma is tasty but also a bit artificial/industrial for me. There are lots smaller artisanal companies making high-quality chili crisp these days, although they often put their own twist on each one, so the flavors can vary. All the most reason to not be limited to just one!

Blank Slate is one 'big' brand in the East coast 'foodie' scene, but I'm sure wherever you buy either specialty food products with an Asian slant, you'll find some local chili crisps. CA surely has options!

This is my favorite that you can buy at Whole Foods or through Amazon. I usually wait for it to be on sale and buy 3 or 4 jars. Check your local famers' markets for vendors too.

I once made my from a China Moon book by San Francisco chef Barbara Tropp. It was incredibly delicious. And pretty easy too: ginger, garlic, red chile flakes and fremented black beans. Definitely worth doing yourself if you can use an industrial amount of this, or have someone to divide it with.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

I see that brand around and considered buying it. But then I notice they also make a Chipotle Chili Crisp, which I'm sure is delicious, no need to fear cross-cultural cuisine. But I always hesitate given all the other options.
