Worst Restaurant Names

by Bill Spohn » Sat Oct 07, 2023 10:07 am

Came across one in a wine book I am reading. It is in Poperinghe, a town in Belgium that by chance I have visited. It is called La Poupée, which by sound at least is the least alluring name I can think of.

Other than the comical names intentionally inflicted on one (e.g. The Garden of Eat'n, Kale Me Crazy, Nacho Daddy, and my favourite, Sconehenge Bakery & Café), has anyone else come across restaurant names that sound inappropriate to an English speaker?

Here's a few more:

Soon Fatt Chinese Takeaway - Dublin Ireland

The Spotted Dick - a Toronto pub (named after a British pudding)

A & K Lick-A-Chick in Nova Scotia

Thai Tanic

Naansense Indian - Chicago

Juan in a Million - one assumes that it is a Spanish specialty place.

The Dairy Godmother - ice cream place

What the Pho - likely used by several Vietnamese restaurants

Pita Pan - assume that t pays J.M. Barrie royalties.

Mother Clucker - chicken joint in London UK

Wok 'n Roll

Frying Nemo - hopefully has a kid's menu

Un Pho Gettable - almost better than Great Pho-King Restaurant

A Salt and Battery - fish and chip shop

Lord of the Fries (royalties no doubt to Golding)

There's a restaurant chain specializing in schnitzel, one of Australia's popular dishes. It's called the Schnithouse.

I have always thought that Momofuku sounds rude.

Well it means 'lucky peach' but yes, one sees the word and wonders why his Momo went along with it....

Thai restaurants seem to enjoy making fun of things. I saw Phuket About It somewhere in Washington recently.

There was or is one in Redding called Phuket. I heard they had good food, but never could get myself to go there. The name was pronounced exactly as it is spelled. Momofuko eggs sound weird to me and gives me a visual I do not like. However, I have some of them in my fridge right now, love them.

In Snorbens there's a long established Asian restaurant called Thai Rack

also in Snorbens the name of the oldest pub in England caused my American friend to double up laughing.

There's a restaurant in Toronto called Thai One On.

There's a Fuk Yuen Seafood Restaurant in Honolulu. There's a Fook Yu restaurant in Hong Kong, and a Fook Yu Lau in Toronto.

There used to be a chain of restaurants in Toronto called Ho-Lee-Chow.

Thymeless Bar and Grill, Toronto.

One of my favourites was Ohrid Fish and Chips, now renamed to British Style Fish and Chips.
