Um, probably not a billion dollar idea, as they are already on market.

I looked for a voice operated (or over-rideable) smoke alarm but didn't see one, Dale.

Our house in Anchorage was poorly designed--the smoke detector was just a few feet away from the oven. I had to be armed with a towel every time I opened the oven door.

The towel method works in a lot of cases but when you sear foie gras that smoke seems to get everywhere and fast. I suppose I would need a door between my kitchen and the front hall but it would be tough to put one there. Been thinking of sticking up some plastic sheeting with tape across at least the top of the door opening.

My security company (which includes the smoke alarm) is getting used to calling when it goes off and they get the now standard "No worries - just cooking again."

We have a building-wide detector in the stairwell but that's far away from the kitchen. The one actually in my house is near the front door so there are two doors I can close between it and the stove.

Was not aware. Love our Nest Thermostat. Thanks for mentioning this, just placed an order.
