Mystery Crumble

by Jeff Grossman » Thu May 28, 2020 2:09 am

OK, I'll fess up: There is a wonton soup container in the very back of the fridge, been there for months now. It contains some kind of crumble. I'm not sure when I made it or what for. Most importantly, I don't remember what it is.

It's definitely been at least partly baked. It's mostly very fine, the size of commercial bread crumbs, but there are some small lumpy bits and the whole is a bit damp so there must be butter cut into it. And at least a little sugar. Maybe it is bread crumbs? It could be flour, like a cobbler topping. There were cakes and pies around the holidays, it could be a failed graham cracker crumb pie crust. I just don't know.

Sigh.

But I'm going to use some or all of it tomorrow: I'm going to make some dessert parfaits. One set of layers will be mixed Mystery Crumble with some almond granola, also busted into tiny grains. The other set of layers will be pumpkin fool made with peach greek yogurt and a little cinnamon. Top with a few nuts (pistachio? pine? almond? walnut?) and some brandied cranberries. ¡Olé!

...or, whatever doughty Puritans would say about cooked squash...

You’re sure it’s still safe after all this time?

I ate a few crumbs last night. No stomach distress today so far.

Good to hear. Didn't want the mystery to turn into a game of Clue.

They are made and resting in the fridge. I used all the pumpkin, all the yogurt, all the granola.

I still have some crumble left.

Sigh.

It's amazing how fast one can forget what's in an unmarked refrigerator container.

I run into that problem with Indian spice blends. Is the powder in that jar sambar podi, or bisi bele bath masala, or ...?
