So here's what crabbing looks like

Nothing like what you'd see on the Discovery channel! This is my neighbor Mike who paddles out on his kayak and sets one trap only. That's an extremely good haul for just one trap and a mere ten hour soak. The houses you see in the background? That's where I live. The modern gray metal rectangle, third from the left, is my home! Point is: we don't go far and this is all there is to crabbing on our bay (on a calm day, that is).

It's really fun. And we have a boat with a motor. And four traps. Yesterday's catch: 10 total, 6 in the first trap and 4 in the fourth. The second and third traps were empty but for a few ladies (only males are eligible for capture), and one of them was broken. It for sure and probably the other got picked by some bastard. We're sure about the one because it's an unusual style trap the jerk wherein the perp cut off the closure because he couldn't figure out how to get in it fast, and the other more conventional trap probably got picked too simply because of the unlikelihood that we wouldn't catch even one male in a 24 hour soak. We set them out in a line about 150 feet apart, baited identically. Today I'll deliver all of them to friends who can't catch their own.

It's a magical place to live.

The heart of downtown Vancouver is 45 miles away, and the border itself about four.
