Another clueless waitress

Me, pointing to limp arugula severely over-dressed in something that looks like hand cream: I was told this salad came with a vinaigrette.

Waitress: That's a vinaigrette.

Me: No it's not, it's creamy.

Waitress: That's because it's a white truffle vinaigrette. It has to be white.

Oy vey indeed.
A bit of training might be in order!

I remember lunching in Galveston and was offered a seemingly endless list of salad dressings, none of which was vinaigrette. Asking for vinaigrette, and after explaining what it is, the response was, they couldn’t do it! I had by this time been in the USA long enough to know that French dressing is NOT anything at all like a vinaigrette, which it would be here.

And you were in Texas, so most likely all would have been thick and sweet.

I'm just old enough to remember when sometimes French dressing WAS vinaigrette, especially in the 'Continental' restaurants my parents favored. But at the supermarket, it was that opaque orange stuff--never did get to the bottom of why they called that French.
