A question about the size of eggs

by Jenise » Sat Oct 14, 2017 2:11 pm

What determines the size of eggs? I always presumed it was breed, but I picked up eggs from a local guy I hadn't bought from before, and the eggs were the tiniest chicken eggs I've ever seen--some green, some brown. More or less the same colors I see around here, but uniformly, they were smaller.

I think there are breed differences, but if I recall correctly, the big issue is the age of the hen. Older birds lay bigger eggs, as a generalization. I don't know enough about chickens to know why this is. :)

"While you cannot alter the basic pattern of how egg size changes as hens age, the feeding and management of your hens can have a measurable impact."

Gosh, just like us human chicks. :)
