wine with lobster

The food-wine match on the wine lovers page recommends a big chardonnay with lobster. we're heading to a superb french restaurant for a birthday dinner this week, and we'll probably have the lobster with leeks and saffron beurre blanc (they serve only the meat; co-owner says "if we're going to charge that much for lobster, we shouldn't make the diners do so much work.") anyone care to weigh in with other wine ideas?

thanks, howie. just so happens that vouvray is the favorite white in our house, and i'm pretty sure there's at least one on the wine list where we're going.

Howie, do you recall the sugar level of the Vouvray? Dry, demi-sec, moulleux?

I wouldn't go for a 'big chard' if, by that you mean Napa. I do think that a big Chablis would be nice. The minerality and acidity would go well with the saffron. Also, are you going to have Maine or Australian lobsters? Either way a Chablis would still be good; contrast with Maine (I find the meat sweet) and compliment with Australian (I find the meat more minerally).

I don't recall anything on the label, but I believe it was dry or if there was RS, it was slightly off-dry.

Personal opinion - Champagne.

I'm going to stick with a white wine, but I'm intrigued. What kind of beer would you be considering?

I would take a Deus ... which is a belgian beer which is made with an additional Champagne fermentation in Champagne

Beer or champagne? How about Champale? It's sort of like a poor man's champagne.

well, we opted for riesling, and dinner was wonderful.

but the champale reference brought back some memories. long, long ago, my dad would let me have a sip of champale. no one makes it anymore that i know of.
