Wine pair for pheasants?

by Barb Downunder » Sun Jul 09, 2017 6:14 am

Serving roast pheasant for our Christmas in July next weekend and seeking possible wine matches , bearing in mind this is hugely problematic given my remoteness and the fact my bottle shop is a touch different to yours. But I put it out because you guys rock and will give me some guidance. And of course if Matilda is around....

I'd go with a Pinot Noir, Matilda! Or in Oz, maybe a lighter style Shiraz, maybe from Coonawarra. But any red will do in a pinch.

I agree with Robin: a mid-weight red. Pheasant is a meaty, robust bird but still a bird.

I respectfully disagree. Pheasant is a game bird and they call for a strong wine. A full blown Bordeaux or Burgundy or even a Barolo would do well, but you'll also do fine with a full bodied Shiraz.

Interesting suggestions, much appreciated and always open to more over the next day or so.
Did some shopping today and came home with a Bowen Estate (Coonawarra) Shiraz and a de Bortoli HeAthcote Shiraz. I might look at a Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir as well. None of them will go to waste if not served at this meal
