Best restaurant review ever?

by Robin Garr » Tue Apr 11, 2017 9:20 am

We've been laughing at this on social media for a couple of days, and it really deserves an airing over here. This savage, hilarious review of Le Cinq in Paris in the Guardian may be even better than Pete Wells' famous takedown of Guy Fieri's place in Manhattan.

It's a gem. "The dining room, deep in the hotel, is a broad space of high ceilings and coving, with thick carpets to muffle the screams. It is decorated in various shades of taupe, biscuit and fuck you."

OMG. Thank you Jenise. This is awesome.

I liked the "crime scene photographer working methodically" reference.

I think Wells' made me laugh harder but this is pretty amazing. An he's taking down a Michelin starred place, not a tourist trap on Times Square!

Jay Rayner, restaurant critic forThe Observer* is now my favourite since the sad demise of A A Gill.

He has more info on his website here
http://www.jayrayner.co.uk/news/spot-th ... inst-mine/
about the images of the dishes as supplied by the restaurant and his pictures, and also about how the newspaper normally get pix of meals reviewed.

*Jay Rayner's article was published in The Observer, a weekly published on Sundays. It's under the same ownership as the daily (except Sunday) Guardian and they share a website. The Observer was first published 1791 and is the world's oldest Sunday newspaper.

While Rayner's face appears in the newspaper and he's on TV, The Guardian's own restaurant critic, Marina O'Loughlin, holds a plate in front of her face in her newspaper photo.

I like her already.
