Beyond Meat: opinions?

by Jenise » Sat Feb 25, 2017 6:22 pm

So this week I saw cartons of 'fresh' Beyond Meat in the meat department at the local Whole Foods, and purchased a pair of burger patties which I panfried last night for some patty melts. I'd been hearing a lot about this brand, possibly initially from Robin here though I'm not sure about that.

I found myself curiously put off by the raw appearance--and I mean a little nauseated--by the way it resembled meat where I'm otherwise totally fine with looking at grain and vegetable patties that look like grains and vegetables.

Upon eating, the nausea came again when the patties, which I had flattened to half their original thickness for fitting better in the bread slices, were so red even though thoroughly cooked. They look not just rare but very rare--much rarer than I'd want a real burger patty. Tastewise, they were pretty good, surprisingly meat-like. But I found myself trying not to look at it while I ate, and to my surprise Bob said the same thing. He finished his, I didn't finish mine.

Anyone else have any experience?

I like them. I think they have kind of an offputting smell when un-coooked - it reminds me of bologna - but I think they make a persuasive "hamburger" when pan-seared as a patty or broken up and used as ground "beef." Beyond Meat is a very interesting company with some very big bucks from technology stars going into it, and one of the major chicken firms - Perdue, I think - has also invested. They are less about providing a product for vegeterians and more about looking for protein alternatives that everyone can like, with the idea of reducing the environmental toll of Big Agra.

This is something I haven't heard of before. What is this stuff made out of?

Surprisingly enough, the protein base comes from peas. It's soy-free. Lots of info here:

(Click the small green "FAQ" button to get more details - I can't link to it directly for some reason.)

And the vivid, fade-resistant color comes from annatto seed and beets.

We've got that up here. Tried it once just for fun (sister doesn't eat higher animals). Crapola, and it wasn't the colour that turned me off.

Can't see anyone submitting themselves to that stuff unless they are dyed in the wool veg. advocate. Vegans eschew animals as food in most part as they consider killing and eating them to be cruelty. I consider THIS stuff to be first degree self abuse for non-veggies. There are lots better products out there should one wish to seek them out.

My comment to Bob was, "Well, there's always falafel." I actually LOVE falafel in it's own right. In this case, I'd have preferred my sandwich as a grilled cheese with onions. (Served it with an 88 Latour, btw.)
