Another use for honey

by Larry Greenly » Wed Jan 10, 2007 11:07 am

I'm repairing my 3rd degree burns on the back of two of my fingers using a remedy recommended by a burn doctor: honey!

Honey is antiseptic (you've never seen moldy honey) and its sugars are used to speed up tissue repair. I've been smearing some on every night and it's working like a charm.

Advice: don't touch a 350F electric skillet.

Larry,

Honey can harbor Clostridium species that produce botulinum toxin and was a cause of botulism in infants that drank honey sweetened formulas. I don't think you are in danger though of anything more than wrinkle free fingers !!

You're right, but I'm far from being an infant and I don't ingest it for my burns (I eat it on tortillas).

Clostridium botulinum requires an oxygen-free environment to live. The spores won't hatch and grow where there's oxygen present, such as honey used as a poultice on a burn. However, the human gut IS oxygen-free, so the risk does exist there in newborn infants who haven't yet developed the normal intestinal bacterial population that keeps C. botulinum in check.

Which is also why you have to be careful with olive oil that has branches of herbs, etc., immersed in it--particularly the homemade kind.

You can also make Mead with it!! 8)

Larry, see if you can find 'Really Raw Honey'. This is great stuff. It comes right out of the hive and into the jar with no processing whatsoever. It still contains bits of hive and propolis (which has great healing properties).

I know a beekeeper (and I used to be one). I also have propolis in liquid form. Thanks for the tip.
