Aji dulce

by Rahsaan » Sat Sep 10, 2016 8:54 pm

Anyone else a fan of aji dulce peppers?

I finally/first took notice of them today at the farmers market, where they were touted as having all the flavor of habeneros but none of the heat. Sure enough, they delivered on that promise. It was interesting because the intense high-pitched fruity flavor of habeneros had my brain and mouth expecting heat, but then none came. A real mind trick!

Unfortunately, somehow my wife managed to get a verifiable impression heat in hers, so she's not a fan :( She said that to her they just taste like spicy deodorant. No idea where she got that from. Because for me they changed my life.

Tonight we had them in salad, tomorrow I will probably put a few in crab cakes. And at the next market I will buy more!

Haven't run into those around here, but I'll keep an eye out for them. I love the idea of habanero flavor without the intense heat.

At first I thought it was a Mexican thing, in which case you would be sure to find it out there. But the internet reveals more of a Caribbean home. Either way, if you see it, try it!

I had no idea these existed, but like Mike I'll be looking for them. I just LOVE the flavor of habanero, and it would be a relief to get that without the heat.

These are available at our local grocery store (Market Basket) under the name "ajicito". They look very much like habaneros or scotch bonnet chiles. I've never tried them, myself.
