In my thermostat's monthly report...

by Jenise » Tue May 10, 2016 1:01 pm

...yes, my Nest thermostat sends me a report every month letting me know how much energy I used, and how that changed since last month and one year ago.

It also included this fun bit (cooking related) about peak reports from Nest CO/fire detectors around the world. Sorry, I couldn't get the graphics to dupe.

Great Britain
6:00 p.m. – 9:59 p.m.
Why Tuesday? Because Tuesday, Feb 9 is Pancake Day. When parents encourage their kids to make - and apparently burn - pancakes.

Netherlands
10:00 a.m. – 1:59 p.m.
Why all the smoke on Thursday mornings? To be honest, we have no idea. If you’ve got any thoughts, let us know on Twitter.

France
10:00 a.m. – 1:59 p.m.
Apparently Saturday breakfast and brunch are the trickiest meals to cook in France.

US/Canada
6:00 p.m. – 9:59 p.m.
Americans and Canadians tend to burn their Sunday dinners.

I like this, though I'll admit to being just a little leery of having my every move monitored by my smoke alarm. It has a very limited view of the world.

My Nest is thermostat-only. After a recent scare with a furnace pumping out CO, though, it's clearly time we buy a CO detector and SO happy are we with the Nest we'll go with that for CO protection, too. We had an only-three year old top of the line Honeywell that we replaced with the Nest, and it has made a huge difference. Our energy use is lower AND we're more comfortable. Gone are the days when we go to bed and remember that we forgot to turn the furnace down or hear it come on in the middle of the night when temps dipped a little lower than expected or forget to set it lower when we leave the house. It has adjusted to all our habits and takes care of everything, including putting itself on AWAY when it detects no motion for X amount of time. We're basically unaware of the need to look after a furnace any more, Nest takes care of everything.
