Frozen shrimp choices

by Fred Sipe » Wed Mar 23, 2016 4:48 pm

If you buy frozen shrimp what do you choose?

I just came home from a stop at 3 different grocery stores. My choices were shrimp from China, Indonesia, Vietnam, India or Argentina. Those from Argentina were thawed from previously frozen at the seafood deli counter.

I thought, right or wrong, that Argentina would likely be the best choice. But alas, I won't buy thawed, and they had no more frozen available.

What is the best choice growing conditions-wise? I ended up buying shrimp from India because that's what the last stop (Aldi - Sea Queen brand) had available but I don't like the idea.

I look for wild Gulf shrimp, which I can usually find but not always. Found some at Fred Meyer (Kroger) last weekend. I also like A LOT the wild Argentine shrimp I can usually get at Trader Joe's though lately I haven't managed to score there.

I avoid Asian--always farmed, always less flavor.

Yikes, Fred; but I'm not really surprised.

I agree with Jenise: buy as local as you can. I've read reports that the Asian farmers keep the best for the local markets -- no surprise -- so we don't get the best over here.

As an aside to Jeff's post, I recommend the Seafood Watch app, because I can never remember suggested fish/sources when in market, very convenient to have on phone.

I usually try to go for Gulf, but I am used to iodine, some find it offputting but to me it's nostalgic.

It's a pretty sorry situation for sure. But Robin, no. Just no.

I hear ya, Fred.

I'll venture to say, though, that they're more bacteria-free than shrimp, and better tasting than surimi.

Surimi is an excellent vehicle for an excellent cocktail sauce.
