I don't know if this is of interest as an alternative, but have you considered a "stick" blender? We haven't had a standup blender for many years, and don't really want one now as it's just one more appliance to fill up the kitchen counter. Our stick blender works very well and is maybe a bit more versatile. You do have to be careful about splashing if you put it right in a pot - one with tall sides like a stockpot works best - but for small quantities, we use it in a tall tumbler just big enough to fit (replaceing the cheap, light plastic cylinder that came with ours.)
Ours is inexpensive and not motorboat-engine powerful; it's a 200 watt Braun. It's lasted us for 10 years or so, though, and still does everything we ask of it.
At a glance, it doesn't seem as if they make that exact blender any more, but here's a page on the Braun website that lists all their stick blenders:
