2015 Chilli Harvest

by Peter May » Sat Sep 26, 2015 6:58 am

I've been picking chillis for the past few months, I usually have two hot ones at lunchtime and I pickled a jar of large disappointlingly mild ones (Black Hungarian and Pili Pili) a couple of weeks ago.

Last week I picked a tray full to freeze for use over the winter.

Red ones are Prairie Fire, black/green ones in middle are Tri-Colour and round blue ones at end are Filius Blue.

Gosh those are pretty, Peter!

Not surprisingly, I don't recognize any of the names but the Filius Blue is very interesting and similar in shape anyway to a pepper known here as a Cascabel. I recently bought a book on chiles--I'll check later to see if any of yours are in there. Could be that over her the same pepper has been other names.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Filius Blue is available in the USA -- here's a blog entry by a California woman who is growing it. http://www.gardenbetty.com/2014/02/a-we ... lius-blue/

Wikipedia lists both Cascabel and Filius Blue as separate varieties.

Filius really does look deep blue until it suddenly ripens red. I got it because of its unusual and attractive colour, but I won't grow it again because it has so many seeds for such a tiny fruit (though that may be caused by the small pot its in), and it hasn't got the heat and flavour I'm looking for.

Prairie Fire is available in the USA from Amazon.com and http://www.organicseedsupply.com. This is teh 3rd year I've been growing it, and I'll be growing it again next year.
