Shelf life - Vacuum packed smoked salmon

by Carrie L. » Mon Aug 31, 2015 9:38 am

Quick question. So I found a package of smoked salmon in the back of the refrigerator drawer the other day. It's been refrigerated since I bought it, but has a "sell by date" of June 28, 2015. I kind of figure since it's unopened, vacuum packed, and smoked, and has been refrigerated, that it will be okay. (As long as it also passes the "sniff" test.) What do you guys think?

I think you're right. Unfortunately, it probably contains enough preservatives to last a year. I'd go by the sniff test, followed by a taste test (it could have continued curing in the package, and be unacceptably mushy). Fish is pretty sensitive, so any offness should be readily self-evident.

I agree with Jenise. It almost certainly is good for at least as long after the 'use by' date as the time between original manufacture and the 'use by' date. (Sorry if that is a hard sentence to parse.)

I found their website: http://honeysmokedfish.com/products/

It says 90 days unopened in the fridge. You could contact them, if you really feel uncertain, but if I had their insurance I'd tell you how old that package is....

As you say, "at least". After all, most use-by dates are less an actual projection of goodness for the consumer than CYA liability protection for the manufacturer.

Thank you both. I shall report back once I open it!
