I was astonished last night to watch some new show connected to Shark Tank, it's called something like After the Tank and it follows up on some of the startups, and learn of 'Plated'.
Apparently the two founders went on Shark Tank, got picked up by Mark Cuban while other of the sharks were dubious about the viability of such a scheme, and then their deal fell apart. Later on they ran into Kevin "Mr. Wonderful" O'Leary somewhere (like they'd be travelling in the same circles, I think not) and he got on board. In some super short time period (I was only half paying attention at first, to be honest, so some of my facts might not be quite right) like three years, they've gone from close to nothing in NYC to "tens of millions"--I definitely heard that part right--with "fulfillment centers" in NY, Miami, Chicago and San Francisco.
What they do is ship you overnight kits of 'fresh' ingredients, including meat/fish/poultry and vegetables, from which you can make a complete "chef-designed" entrée that you can prepare in "under 30 minutes". Pasta, spices, you name it--it all comes in the box.
I'm kind of astonished that such a thing could be that successful and yet someone generally aware like me wouldn't have read about it somewhere. And no I wouldn't be a customer, but I'm gobsmacked to learn that this exists and that it has apparently been massively successful.
Anyone have any first hand experience?
