Salt free from TJ's

by Christina Georgina » Wed Apr 22, 2015 11:05 pm

Needing to cook for a relative with congestive heart failure I found a salt free mix at Trader Joe's that is so wonderful I am grabbing it for every other dish lately. Especially when in a pinch for time, 21 Seasoning Salute contains onion, black pepper, celery seed, cayenne, parsley, basil, marjoram, bay leaf, oregano, thyme, savory, rosemary, cumin, mustard, coriander, garlic, carrot, orange peel, tomato granules, lemon juice powder, oil of lemon and citric acid and is quite handy for many uses.
I ordinarily do not use blends but I do not miss the salt when I use this and the patient is grateful for some tasty food.

How interesting! Have you tried Mrs. Dash? If so, how do they compare?

Don't know Mrs. Dash but this mix has a bit of heat and a very lively, fresh citrus note that works well with a lot of dishes.

The Mrs. Dash is overly dependent on onion. It can liven up the flavor of something while it's in front of you, but the problem is an aftertaste of increasingly rancid and objectionable onion stays with you for hours afterward.

Good to know, and I keep an eye out for that the next time I'm in TJ's.. I try to watch my sodium intake (mild hypertension) and I'm amazed at the lack of low salt or salt-free options at our local markets. Guess coronary related health issues are not as chic as gluten issues.

The odd thing is that after reducing my salt intake I don't really miss it at all and now rely almost exclusively on other spice options. I also eat out less often as many chefs place waay too much emphasis on salt for my tastes. I've become much more selective about where I eat and what I eat. It's odd that I can go into almost any restaurant and the chef will fall all over their apron to get me a vegetarian or gluten free option, but get their knickers in a knot about a low salt option.

FWIW, my late M-I-L used Mrs. Dash and I hated the stuff for reasons mentioned above. The after taste was awful.
