An accidental baking success (at least in my mind)

by Redwinger » Fri Jan 02, 2015 4:57 pm

Yesterday, I was baking up a couple of loaves of pumpkin bread and apparently messed up. After baking them for the allotted time the loaves were about 1/4-1/3 the normal size. Definitely flat and deflated.. After doing a quick WTF, I realized that I had forgotten to add the baking soda. My first, second, and perhaps third inclination was to toss them into the trash can, but before doing the deed I decided to cut a piece off and take a taste. Hey, this is pretty good. It was denser and moister than my usual bread and had a distinct fresh pumpkin pie flavor and texture. NJ didn't care for it as much as I did. I've been scarfing it down since it came from the oven and will certainly make it again if NJ let's me :).

So, have you ever fouled up a recipe and liked the resultant product as much as, or better than, what was intended?

Not so far.

I vividly remember an extremely dense, almost gritty oyster stew that I served... and when I returned to the kitchen I saw several quarts of milk and cream still sitting on the counter!

Not me, but my wife once made a fruitcake using her grandmother's recipe that listed ingredients, but not quantities. The result was an "uncake", as we called it, that consisted of a lot of candied fruit barely held together by a tiny bit of flour. I loved it, but she refuses to make it again. :(

I have, and in the not-too-distant past. I remember the jubilation and the "not at all what I intended but would definitely do this again", however I don't remember what it was. Unless I record some event like that here, I don't write things down. But I know it feels great, so hats off to you!
