A New Sriracha! FLYING GOOSE.

by Brian K Miller » Mon Dec 29, 2014 3:57 pm

Nhan Con Ngong Bay (FLYING GOOSE BRAND)
Looks very similar to the classic California brand in bottle design, graphic design on the label. But this is if anything a more REAL version of Sriracha in that it is actually made in SRIRACHA, THAILAND!

Ingrediants are similar but not identical. No vinegar for one thing, which means the sauce requires refrigeration, I am guessing. On the palate, not quite as sweet, noticeably more garlicy and a little hotter....more of a nice burn.

Cool stuff!

I think I bought some Flying Goose years ago and really liked it -- but have not been able to find it for years.

I wonder if it was the same stuff? I am not that fond of the Sriracha that I see everywhere.

The bottle LOOKS almost identical to the California version! It just showed up at our local "good" supermarket, Nugget Market.

I still like the California version, too. But, as with most American food products (including wine 8) ) it is "sweeter" than the actual Thai stuff (Flying Goose).

Thanks for the heads-up, Brian! I'll watch for it at the Nugget.

I bought Flying Goose sriracha once, as it was recommended in my Thai cookbook. But I haven't been able to find it again. I currently use Shark brand (also from Thailand).

Haven't run into the Flying Goose yet. But a small dish of sriracha was served to us in a restaurant the other day that was more vinegary and less sweet than the popular brand, which could have been an in-house modification, but either way I really really liked it. When I ran out a month or so ago I bought Lee Kum Kee brand. Haven't opened it yet.

Speaking of sriracha, I complained in another thread that it was the most annoying food thing about 2014 to me--it's suddenly EVERYWHERE. Further evidence: the other day at my local supermarket, I noted that they have a new fresh in-house sausage, which brings their total sausage offerings to three: bratwurst, double-smoked, and now Sriracha! Jeesh--this is going way too far.

LOL.

Let us know what you think of Lee Kum Kee. I found it...metallic! :( And did not buy it again.

You have seen the commercials for the Jack In The Box Sriracha burger?

Yes, and the Pizza Hut sriracha and honey crust pizza. This has gone too far!

After reading this I opened my bottle yesterday and completely agree: it's metallic. Weird!

There is a newish restaurant in Oakland called HOMEROOM that specializes in macaroni and cheese. I have leftover gouda-Sriracha mac and cheese in the office refrigerator right now. It was pretty excellent, especially if one adds roast chicken to the pasta!
