Recommendation for food processor

by Christina Georgina » Sun Nov 30, 2014 7:49 pm

My 30 year old Cuisinart is just fine thank you. Because I don't know the market I'm looking for your recommendations for a food processor for a beginner bachelor cook. Is Cuisinart still a good brand ?

I've heard that Cuisinart went downhill badly after a corporate buyout back in the '90s. I can't prove this from personal testimony, but a whale of a lot of respected names went belly-up during that same go-go corporate era. Do you have access to Consumer Reports? I'll try to peek in to their archives soon and see if they're still down on Cuisinarts/Robot Coupe.

We've had a Hamilton Beach for a few years that we're perfectly happy with and it was not too terribly expensive.

Just got the Breville Sous Chef 12 cup and am loving it. I'm impressed with how well Breville appliances are made - it's probably the only one I would buy unless you want to invest in something like a Robot Coupe. That might be a bit of overkill for a beginning cook.

Consumer Reports still likes the Cuisinart brand quite a bit:
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news ... /index.htm

Like Georgina, we have a 30 year old model that outperforms the energizer bunny. The thing seems pretty bullet proof. A story I like to retell goes something like this:

Around 2005, when our Cuisinart was about 20 years old, Norma was using it to knead a particularly heavy dough as she had done countless times previously. Suddenly the kitchen reeked of that burning electric odor and the machine went belly up. Yup, just stop working. We tried it a few minutes later...nada, apparently fried. So, I put it aside planning to put it out with the next trash run. I dug out the user manual (yes, we still had it after 20 years) and noticed that at that time the motor had a "lifetime warranty".

I called the tele# listed in the warranty booklet and it was promptly answered. I explained what happened and that the motor died. The man on the other end of the line replied in a rather haughty, annoyed tone, "Sir, THAT just does NOT happen".

Him: If you'll get the machine and plug it in let's see what we can do.

Me:(Thinking smugly, I'll show you Mr Haughty pants). I plug it it, press a few buttons and I'll be damned the thing fired right up and continues to work great here in 2014 and it gets a lot of use..

Mr Haughty Pants, explained that the machine has a kill switch which turns the processor off when it approaches the point of exploding. The switch apparently resets once the unit cools down. Pretty good engineering if you ask me.
Smile, it gives your face something to do!

Good to know. Thanks, Bill! :)

Ours is a smallish model, but it's been going strong since around 1980 and shows no sign of wear. Mary doesn't like that it's not easy to clean - she insists it was designed by a Guy who let "the little woman" clean it. But it runs like a tank. Glad to know the brand is still strong with CR, although I'm almost sure the run of models in the late '90s or thereabouts didn't meet with their favor.

While old Cuisinarts may have been even better, the current ones are still top of the line.

And FWIW, I have yet to see anything made be Kitchenaid be less than top notch, and they make food processors too.

Bill, as I'm sure I detailed to you when you bought your stand mixer, KitchenAid's customer service is second to none.

Btw, speaking of the stand mixers, have you seen the new mixing blade that has a spatula side on it? Want!

Just saw one of those yesterday and thought about getting one for my wife's St. Nicholas Day Stocking. Probably ought to go and get it.
