Where do you order your herbs and spices?

by Linda Baldwin » Sun Nov 26, 2006 2:39 pm

I've ordered from Penzey's for years, but I seem to remember somebody (some time ago) mentioning a better source.

Thanks,
Linda

I buy most of mine at a local Indian grocery store.

I can get just about everything I want locally at various places, including International, Chinese, and Indian supermarkets (and they're usually less expensive). Plus I grow some.

Thanks Paul, but I don't have any such places locally.

Larry, I grow all the herbs I can here in Central Virginia, but there are some, like good black pepper, sharp Hungarian paprika, and many others that I can't grow myself.

Thanks,
Linda

Gotcha. I'm fond of The Spice Hunter http://www.spicehunter.com I have a number of their spices including Tellicherry black pepper.

I've grown paprika and it might be possible for you, too. It's not any harder than growing regular chiles. Of course, it may depend on the type you want. Interestingly, NM is a big paprika producer and ships it around the world.

Hi Linda! Girl it has been a looooooong time since we have seen your name here. I suppose you are busy as always, and I guess you are tending to spend your time on the Netscape food board. Anyways, it is good to see you here, and don't be such a stranger.

Linda, I'm still happy with Penzey's, although I never buy the pre-mixed spice blends that seem to take up more and more of their catalog.

Are you certain there's no good Indian or Asian grocery in Richmond, though? I know there's nothing out in Green Acres where you live ;) , but I would think a city Richmond's size would surely have at least one or two.

I've used Penzeys for years, trust them, and consider them very competitive with their prices. Why change? Like Robin, I don't buy mixes (except for their salad dressings).

Another vote for Penzey's.

Hey Bob! Nice to see you again too! No, I'm not terribly busy, just do a little photography, make enough $$ to pay for the equipment and braggin' rights when my pics get published.

Frank and I think of you and all the others every August and hope you're having a grand time in Daytwah.

I'm glad to see everybody is still happy with Penzey's. No, I don't frequent forums much anymore other than a couple photo related ones. I remember though that the Compuserve, er Netscape Cooks Forum was pretty active some years ago.

Thanks,
Linda

Robin, I'm sure you're right, but I drive to Richmond as little as possible. As long as Penzey's still has good quality herbs and spices, I'll stick with them.

Thanks,
Linda

Hey Bucko! Thanks for another vote for Penzey's. I've made my order.

What salad dressing mixes do you like? I saw they had a ranch dressing, but I copied that 40 years ago when Daddy brought back a case of Hidden Valley packets from CA. My recipe even got published in Southern Living Mag.[g]

Do you ever see Brian Loufborrow any more?

Thanks,
Linda

As a matter of fact, several of us from our old tasting group flew down for a decadent wine and food event at his new Petaluma home. He cooked up a wonderful Chinese meal. They have an acreage, so Lisa has her horses.

It also provided me the opportunity to pay off a debt to Steve Van Horn, who lives in Sonoma. I owed him a dinner and wine for the OU loss to USC. We went to a place called Cole's Chop House -- pretty decent.

What fun! That reminds me of the time Bryan visited with us on the boat in Norfolk. We took him to the yacht club for dinner, and I believe we had the worst food and service any of us had ever experienced. So embarrassing!

Say hi to all for me.

Thanks,
Linda
