Happy 100th birthday to Julia Child

by Barb Downunder » Wed Aug 15, 2012 2:46 am

Julia would have been 100 today. What an influences she has had.
We have recently been viewing her TV show the French chef which my partner found somewhere in the ethernet.
Production of cooking shows sure has changed over the last 40 odd years! They are fun to watch and nearly all done in a single take
and her recovery from glitches is a joy to watch. The tarte tartin sticks "that didn't go so well" and then calmy tucking it all back together.
Despite the glitches etc the techniques are still as valid today as in yesteryear. Wonderful stuff, and I'm even motivated to spend time in the kitchen as
I have a copy of the book I found in a second hand store.

A job well done Julia.

Unfortunately (?) I'm busy getting ready to go to MOCOOL and when I return, my lady friend will be in Maine for a week, so we're planning a Julia Child dinner when she gets back, it about 2 weeks.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

We have every one of her books, and have been guided by her teachings for decades. A truly great woman.

That pretty much tells my story. I got married in 1970, I was a penniless graduate student, but we were cooking French according to Julia from day one. And so were our friends. A Julia dinner sounds like a great idea, once the weather cools a little. We loved the TV show but I think I knew her from Mastering before I saw her on TV.

We did a birthday dinner; that is, I changed out the bearnais sauce I had planned on making for a menuiere sauce to go with some roasted salmon, and we toasted her. Seems to have gone on around the world. If there's a heaven, she's smiling a lot this week.

For those of you who haven't seen Thor Iverson's tribute to Julia (and who care to):
