Ice Cream Question II: Sugar Cone, Plain Cone or Waffle?

by Jeff B » Wed May 23, 2012 6:47 pm

Forgive me if I'm posting too many of these trivial questions. My hope is that they provide some fun. If not, I deeply apologize. I promise this will be my last one of the day...:)

It seems people are often very particular about the kind of cone they enjoy their ice cream with. Some must have a sugar cone. Others prefer a plain cone. Waffle cones are also popular.

To be honest, I can enjoy an ice cream on any of them but I'm mostly a waffle cone guy (if given a choice).

I think I prefer it 1) for the taste - sort of a blend between a sugar cone and a plain one, and 2) it feels more accomodating for the ice cream scoop.

I usually prefer no cone - in a cup.

When I do a cone its usually a good homemade waffle. I don't think I've had a sugar cone or plain cone in 25 years.

I like the crunch of a sugar cone, on the rare occasions when I have a cone.

Sugar cone for hard ice cream, regular cone for soft. In both cases I find that my favorite bite(s) are what's left at the very end when it's mostly cone and just a little ice cream.

I prefer my ice cream in a cone, and like them all... double scoop of two different flavors. I want my favorite flavor on the bottom. My favorite bite is the very last one, because the cone is usually dripping a little, and I just gobble it up.
If I had to pick one cone, it would be the regular cone, because it is so mild and always compliments all flavors.

If getting ice cream in a cone, sugar cone is the choice with the greatest attachment to childhood. But soft serve goes in a plain cone.

If you asked for that in these parts Karen you would end up with a cone about a foot high! Just about all Northern New England ice cream shops ask if you want Kiddie, Small, Medium, or Large. We always ask for a Kiddie in a sugar cone and they typically come out about four inches high!

Not a fan of cones. If forced, sugar.

I prefer a cake cone (the regular kind). Never liked sugar cones.

Carl, we have found the same thing in NE. Have you been to Scoops near Weir's beach? We are fans of that place. And yes, the servings are huge. Even the kiddies.

Haven't been to Scoops, but it sounds typical of the region. We frequent a place called Ted's Fried Clams just across the Maine border in Shapleigh. In addition to fried clams, they have every kind of seafood you could imagine from lobster to squid; they have ribs, burgers, and much else. The ice cream bar is separate from the main ordering counter as is the steam table. Bev can get a milk free raspberry sorbet there and the kiddie portion is so huge it won't fit on a cone. So they turn it upside down in a dish and provide a spoon to help you!

I am so there with you on points one and three, which is why I like waffle cones--they're larger, so there's more cone! Can't agree re #2 because I don't like soft ice cream. I don't even like hard ice cream if it starts to melt. If it starts dripping, I'm done. Which is also why I don't care for ice cream in a bowl, or anything a la mode.
