Costco run!

by Jenise » Sat May 12, 2012 11:37 am

Heard they had Black Cod (aka sable fish, also butter fish) there yesterday. Whole, about 3 pounds each, and just $7 or $8 a pound. Can't get over there fast enough!
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Wish I had thought to look for it. I was in Costco BOTH yesterday and today. I saw that they had wonderful salmon and wonderful prices but I didn't look for other kinds of fish.

We ended up buying oysters and flounder for supper tonight. Raw oysters first, panko crusted sauteed flounder second. I grew up with flounder and it's still one of my favorite fish, even tho it has less flavor than other species.

Something I love about Costco is how they stock up locally with what's good there. You might not have black cod, but you have the flounder which we'd never see here. Same as they have (heart be still!) fish like opa at Costco Honolulu that I'll never see in Bellingham.

The cod was good, but what an interesting exercise fileting it was. Once you get the filet off, you realize that each has one big meaty side and one thin side, and that the thin side is full of bones that are impossible to remove with the needle nose pliers that work so well on most other fish. I ended up just cutting that side off, and rescuing the few bone free bits to thread on a skewer so as not to waste anything unneccessarily. The ratio of good meat to waste parts was about 1:1, so $8 a pound didn't end up being a bargain. Oh, and when I threw the parts out on the patio for the seagulls? NO interest. Zero. I thought seagulls would eat anything and everything from the sea. Ended up having to pick up the mess and hose down the patio.

I wasn't clear -- Friday I took my tenants so that they could stock up for a grad students' party. But the receipt got lost, probably it blew away, very windy.

That would make reimbursement complicated, so I called and found out that I could get another receipt printed out, so I fought the crowds and went back on Saturday.

We bought the flounder and oysters at a different store.
