Daikon seeds

by Mike Filigenzi » Mon May 07, 2012 4:26 pm

Anyone run across these before? They showed up at our local farmers' market yesterday and it was the first time I'd seen them. I asked the guy behind the counter how they're used and he told me they work well in stir fry (which is what he says about nearly everything he sells). We took a pack home and gave them a try. They look like little bitty rat-tailed pea pods. Eat them raw, and they have a strong radishy spiciness to them. Saute them and the heat goes away giving more of a vegetable type of flavor. We put some in a hot pan with a little EVOO, sauteed a few minutes, then added some thawed frozen peas, some salt, and a little butter. They were quite good although not enough to make me want to go out and get more.

If I do run across more, I may try pickling them - they seem like something that would be very amenable to that process.

New to me! But I'm with Christina, daikon sprouts are delicious. I love them as part of a sashimi plate.
