Found my local steakhouse!

by John Treder » Fri Mar 09, 2012 12:37 am

I went out last night and tried Cricklewood, a sort of roadhouse a couple of miles up Old Redwood Highway from my house.
Suddenly, it's 1975, and in a good way. Booths, lots of wood, good sized full bar.
I had a bowl of very good black bean soup, a 12 oz cut of rib roast (not advertised as prime, but aged in-house 45 days) with baked potato "with", and cheesecake. I also had a couple of glasses of Sausal PR Zin '08. Their bottle price for that was only $30, and I paid $24 at the winery a couple of years ago. (It's good, BTW!)
The roast was perfectly red-rare and very tender. Everything came very fast - I didn't finish my soup before the roast was brought and the waitress apologized. And the whole deal was about $50 before tip.
Best steakhouse I've been to in years!

Sounds fantastic, John. I love the whole "roadhouse" vibe!

I do, too, and it's been years and years since I've seen it!

Yeah, it's a dying breed for sure. I guess that's because the thing that makes it a true roadhouse disappears--all the roads either get built up or bypassed. There aren't any up here. If the word 'tavern' is interchangeable and if upscale-ness isn't damning, it's likely the ambience Tyler Florence was looking for when he opened up his new place in northern California. Haven't been myself, but I've heard good things.
