What's for dinner? I dunno, what is this?

by Dale Williams » Mon Mar 05, 2012 11:27 am

Betsy and I were planning on a simple Sunday dinner - artichokes and some cauliflower/stout/cheddar soup from freezer. She saw a friend Sunday AM whose husband is in Europe on business, invited Annabelle and her girls. We needed to expand, decided to add a mushroom risotto.
So I took the quart of soup from freezer, put in hot water till it loosened and put in a pot and put on low heat. While I was steaming artichokes, Betsy was making risotto. I mixed some curry powder (Penzeys Maharajah) in some mayo for the artichokes. As everything is coming to completion, I smell the curry- that's strong stuff I think.
So we sit down, start with just a cup of the soup. As Annabelle says "wow, this soup is good" I'm looking at Betsy. Because this is definitely not cauliflower/stout/cheddar soup - it's some kind of winter squash with curry (that's what I was smelling). The strange thing is neither Betsy nor I remember making any such soup. Usually she is pretty good about labeling anything in freezer, both thought only thing unlabeled was the stout soup.
We didn't tell our guests we had no clue what we were eating, first time that has ever happened.

Ha, that's funny! Glad you are good cooks otherwise the surprise might not be so pleasant.
It amazes me that I always think I will remember what is in a container (how could I forget this is homemade marinara with sausage???) before it goes into the freezer, but when it comes out---HUH? I've started labeling for obvious reasons.

As a side note on mix ups (and your curry addition reminded me of this), Len had a cold last week so I made a big pot of chicken soup on Thursday. I came down with the cold on Saturday so heated up some of the soup. I had just read where adding cayenne pepper to chicken soup brings even more recovery benefits, so I added a shake of cayenne pepper.
Well, sitting down to eat it, the flavor was distinctly "Indian," and my broth had a very yellow tinge. Turns out I added Turmeric instead. It was good though!
Hello. My name is Carrie, and I...I....still like oaked Chardonnay. (Please don't judge.)

That's where it went!

Obviously (if you read what I just posted in the What's Cooking thread), I need to start too.

@Dale: laughed at your story. I have never gotten so far as putting it on the table without realizing the item wasn't what I thought, but I have had to scurry to change something in the 11th hour for that reason.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

I am so there as well ! What we need to have are easy, fail safe freezer labels that get stashed with the freezer containers...ones that stick; that the ink doesn't disappear from and that are erasable and re-usable. Ink and adhesive chemists get to it !
If it were easy to do and the labels stayed on I wouldn't have so many mystery containers in the freezer
Mamma Mia !

How about a glassene (or other transparent material) envelope glued firmly to the lid and you can put a note -- any ink, any paper -- in it?
