Greek Basil

by GeoCWeyer » Wed Jan 11, 2012 3:32 pm

Does anyone else grow and use it? it is a great plant to grow. It grows in a large pot into a shrub like bush. I have two of them each summer at the beginning of my paver walk. It has a wonderful spicy minty odor, grows well and seems to be bug and fungus resistant. However it does make a great marking spot for male dogs or if you live in the country foxes! So care must be taken to avoid this from happening.

Greek/bush basil has a little different flavor but I love it and it isn't so fussy. Two plants give me all I need including plenty to dry for the winter. Perfect plant for the "garden pot" crowd.

We've been container growing it for years and it some how seems a tad spicier than the larger leaf sweet basil. The leaves are much smaller but it's easy to grow, produces plenty of leaves and is nicely fragrant.

Ooh! And it winters over, it's not an annual?

Doesn't winter over in MN. I tried it but to no avail. I also tried it in the one window where I can actually have plants in the winter. ...western exposure. Even with a grow light to assist I couldn't get it to live. Lavender, serrano peppers and Tuscan rosemary do okay in the window.
