So it looks like the oven gets fixed today

The final diagnosis? The safety sensor that is supposed to turn off the gas after a failed ignition attempt didn't turn off the gas. Ergo, when the oven failed to ignite on the first try, gas built up and when ignition succeeded on a subsequent re-attempt, out came the fireball. Doesn't give one a big sense of confidence, does it.

Have you considered the virtues of a more traditional technique -- campfire cooking? :?

That's scary, Jenise.

I'm not so sure I'd trust it again despite the repair. :(

That does make sense. So they'll replace the sensor?

Tough one there. If they're correct (and it does sound reasonable), then how long will the replacement last? Will getting your oven going always mean a moment of trepidation? OTOH, replacing such things ain't cheap. If they're right on the diagnosis and the replacement is reliable then you shouldn't have any more issues with this.

Trust issues.

Sorry, my description was poor--I didn't understand the problem well enough, but now I do. What it turns out they replaced was the whole valve that provides the gas supply to the oven, not the sensor. The sensor was apparently correctly instructing the valve to turn off once the ignition attempt had failed, but the valve itself wasn't shutting off. We trust that diagnosis, as the original technician tested a number of scenarios. So, whole new thingie in there. And not that expensive at $110 for the part. Oh, and warranty? 90 days. :(

I'd be comfortable with a whole new valve. And of course they've got you over a barrel on the warranty. <shrug>

Ah. That definitely sounds reasonable and the price certainly isn't bad.

Ah, in that case it should be fine. But still, you shouldn't have had to deal with this at all.

That's sure true, Cynthia, a stove that spendy shouldn't have safety issues at three years old. It has others, though, the repair boys are downstairs again right now as I type. After they left the other day, we realized that they hadn't returned it to the exact state it had been when they got here. It wobbles, something else doesn't line up and two of the knobs are difficult to turn. Bob thinks they torqued it moving it by hand initially, and I just heard the words "get the air sled". The fun never ends!

Those things sound minor compared to the valve problem. Hope they were all rectified and everything is in working order again.

To be sure. Only minor, but the kind of thing that increases the dissatisfaction level by causing you to question the quality of the repair.
