Barb Freda gave us a contraption of that general type when she got rid of a bunch of kitchen stuff before moving. I think it was purpose-built rather than re-tooled from a cookie tin, but the concept was very similar. It used wood chips of various varietals
that you could buy from the company, and of course I'm sure you could have made your own.
Bottom line, it was interesting but intense. It made the house really smell smoky, and even a short ride in the tin imparted a strong smoky flavor that went beyond what you'd expect at the hands of a skilled grillmeister. It wasn't awful, but we used it a couple of times and then it went from shelf to yard sale.
