Does espresso cheese sound good to you?

by Jenise » Sat Nov 05, 2011 1:46 pm

Didn't to me. I don't like goofy-flavored things. I don't want vanilla syrup in my coffee or peaches in my tea--those embellishments, to my mind, are all about making coffee and tea palatable to the kind of person who doesn't like either straight. So I didn't think much differently when I was at a food and wine fair put on by a local grocer last week and, starving, approached the closest food table that wasn't ten people deep. My heart kind of sank when I saw that all the cheeses had flavored washed-rind coatings on them like balsamic, raspberry, merlot and espresso, but hey, I was starving, so I tried them.

The core cheese is the same in each case, texture smoothly-firm like a 12 month gouda and tangy like a parmesan but with a nutty finish that's also gouda-like. The cheeses are made in Wisconsin and the company name is Sartori (where BellaVitano is the name for this product line). To my complete and total surprise, where the other flavors were just 'eh', especially the raspberry, the espresso-rinded cheese was divine. There was a harmony between the cheese and the strong coffee flavor I would not have expected. And it was great with a glass of cabernet.

Highly reccomended!

Well, yeah, normally I'd say no...but truth is I have had several washed cheeses (or rind-rubbed cheeses) over the years that have been spectacularly good, so a hasty judgement might be wrong.

The best, hands down, were the beer and ale washed cheeses from Belgium. Addictively good. And several Italians, like the one rubbed with truffle powder. And of course, Ig Vella's legendary-for-a-reason rind washed Sonoma Jack, especially when well aged, when the cheese and the rind coating are so utterly harmonious with the other. And Cowgirl Creamery makes one of their delicious soft cheeses by spritizing them lightly with a sweet Muscat wine from Lake County that gives them a delicious floral lift.

So I'd be willing to try an espresso-washed, yea. Your description sounds good. (I don't think I'd care for the raspberry either, though).

Y'know, I could see how the combination of espresso and cheese might work when so many others don't.

Y'know, it doesn't sound good, though I like both separately. But on your recommendation, I will watch for it and give it a try. Thanks.

I'd have said I'd never have liked the mango ginger Stilton I had recently, but I did, so I'll reserve judgement on the espresso cheese.....

How about chocolate flavored cheese? Can anyone guess where this comes from?

Good guess, but the Azeris gave up the Cyrillic alphabet when they broke off from the FSU.

The chocloate flavored cheese was purchased in Mongolia by some touring cyclists riding across Asia to Europe. They thought they were buying chocolate, but...
(BTW, Mongolia sounds like an interesting place to visit)

So do they make this by mixing Hershey's syrup and mare's milk in their saddlebags and then riding for a day or two?

Oddly enough, President is a brand of a sort of multinational French cheese company - I guess they have plants in Asia? I know some of the supermarkets around here carry their Normandy butter.
