Cumin Seeds versus Celery Seeds

by Karen/NoCA » Sat Sep 10, 2011 2:04 pm

I had a ton of Sweet Banana and Cubanelle Peppers from harvest this week so it was back to pickling this morning. As I was gathering my ingredients, I accidentally grabbed the cumin seed instead of the celery seed. When I was boiling the brine, I noticed something different about the seeds but it was a fleeting thought and I continued with my batch. While putting the spices away I noticed the jar said cumin seed, not celery seed. Yikes! So now I am wondering if I am going to get a good mistake or a bad one....any thoughts? The other seed in the brine is yellow mustard seeds.

It will be delicious but different. I would only worry that cumin is so dominating a flavor. Your peppers might end up tasting kind of East Indian.

Well not a bad thing, I suppose as I have been putting my sweet peppers in some East Indian/Turkish dishes I have been making this summer. They seem to go so well with eggplant, zucchini mixes. Not sure how the pickled would be, but I play around with fusion all the time, so we will just wait and see. There are so many things I have been using them with, so even if they are a little strong on the cumin, it will be all right. Thanks!

It'll probably be better! ;)

(From a very, very biased viewpoint - cumin is one of my favourite spices, I use it liberally in a LOT of Indian dishes and toss small amounts into variations on Thai/Chinese/Middle Eastern/Caribbean dishes quite often, so I imagine anything would be better with a bit of cumin.)
