Two new favorite things

I'm not into gadgets, but this little corn peeler from Kuhn Rikon removes corn from a cob in a way nothing else can. The blade is curved, so when you hold a cob flat in one hand and put this gadget at the top of the ear and pull it toward you, the kernels pop off in neat long strips, evenly sized and whole, cutting just above the tough part of the cob that you inevitably get some of when you try to denude a cob with a knife because you tend to cut too deep because you know that the kernels either side of the middle are going to get cut too shallowly. That's precisely why I tend avoid making dishes out of fresh corn--the corn itself looks kind of ugly and inelegant. No more! Each cob is stripped in about five seconds, and the cob itself left behind is as smooth as glass. Highly reccomended!

The fuddy-duddies at Corningware have finally gotten over the French white stuff and designed oven-to-table bakeware that's both very contemporary and vastly improved in the sensibility department. Look at my new 9 x 13 baking dish. It's black, heart be still! And it's tall--almost 4 quarts compared to the shallow 2 qt 9x13's of my mother's generation. AND IT'S GOT HANDLES. This line also comes in red and white, or at least those are the colors the Ace Hardware store I bought this at had.

A woman after my own heart. Don't you just love extraordinary cookware and gadgets with utility?! Heart be still!! And, black is my color. It is the color of my granite countertop and my Emile Henry Flame cookware. Both things I love! And now, Corning?! Don't even get me started. I'm not even going to raid my travel savings account. I'm going to just go down to Kitchens 'n Things to do a window shop -- really!

Yup, and all I was there for was Ball jars. You'd love this hardware store, it's a real throw-back old-fashioned kind of place that sells housewares and small appliances--lots of them. It's in Lynden, which doesn't have any department stores of it's own so the specialty stores cover a lot more bases, and there was a store much like it in the town I grew up in. I can't go in there and not go up and down each aisle; I always find something.

But yes--BLACK with smooth, sensual lines. Couldn't believe my eye when I saw that it was good old CorningWare!

I looked up the corn zipper on Amazon and it seems that there might be a problem with the safety cap being poorly designed causing folks to cut themselves when removing. Do you see this as a problem?

All of my regular vegetable peelers are Kuhn and I love them. I will be getting the corn cutter for sure! Thanks for the tip.
Hello. My name is Carrie, and I...I....still like oaked Chardonnay. (Please don't judge.)

Hopefully there are directions included on how the cap should be safely removed. I did order it. I never did like removing those kernels with a knife, seemed dangerous somehow. A comment was also made that it was easier to remove kernels by laying the cob horizontally rather than vertical.

No instructions needed! It's incredibly obvious when looking at it that it's a cap so must be pulled up and off off the way any cap would. When you get yours, Karen, you'll be amazed that we had this conversation. And yes re horizontal, it's how I described it above. Also, because the corn is tenderer after cooking, a lighting boiling makes it cut cleaner than raw corn would.

Like any new gadget, you just have to figure out for your methods how it works best.

Not at all; I don't even get the complaint--I'm just grateful it came with a cap. Perhaps the real problem is that some people just shouldn't own sharp objects. :)

Have you ever added a cob or two to a pot of veggie/beef soup?

Like a seasoning ingredient you mean? No, but I can imagine it would add flavor.
