Ludo Bites

Anyone watch this on the Sundance Channel? For those who don't know, it's a reality series wherein Ludo Lefevre (I think I've spelled his last name incorrectly, I believe there's a 'b' in there but for the life of me I can't figure out where to put it) of several five star restaurants in Los Angeles fame, and his wife drive around the country and talk some restaurant into letting him take over the kitchen for a night. He's a funny guy and a talented chef, but....

Bob and I watched two whole episodes, skimmed a third, and then deleted a fourth unwatched and removed it from our DVR auto-record requests.

Narrated by his wife, an American former entertainment lawyer, it's quickly and boringly formulaic. They arrive in X town and pretend to try out a bunch of restaurants before making an offer to one in particular. It's always a casual joint completely unused to his type of food. The owner and staff never know what to make of this loud Frenchman. Sometimes they can't understand him, and you get the impression that he tries hard to not be understandable because "that's good TV". Also "good TV" is the extent to which he swears and yells and, in general, throws fits when things don't go his way, including dragging recalcitrant appliances out into the parking lot for a session of physical harm.

Yawn. It's all very self-indulgent. It's as if someone said "Gee, he swears as good as Gordon Ramsey but he's funnier, so he should have a show." Well, no, it's not working like that, at least for me. Gordon's actually a very savvy guy with great people instincts. Ludo's just a big kid.

Have not seen it, nor am I sure our Direct TV offers the Sundance channel. It does sound boring. So I wonder, do the restaurants get paid for allowing the Frenchman and his wife to borrow the kitchen for one night? Really, If I owned a restaurant, I am not sure I'd want to go through the trials of having the camera crew and the chef move into my territory.

Is that the same guy who had the show (not sure what channel...Bravo maybe?) where he had a cooking school in Santa Monica with a bunch of misfits? If it is, his accent cracks me up. Watching his mouth move is like watching a foreign film dubbed into English. I'll have to check it out just for giggles.

Hmmm, I'm not aware of any other show he's had, but you could be right. And you wouldn't realize it from my post, but I think he's adorable. HOWEVER, that which makes him adorable doesn't doesn't hold my interest when everything else about the show feels so contrived. It just makes him seem contrived too.

The restaurants probably do receive some kind of compensation for the imposition but that's not apparent to the viewer. The benefit to the restaurant is the hoopla surrounding the fact that this "famous TV chef" shows up, plus turning every table over twice in one night where most of these restaurants aren't typically open for dinner service*.

*Why they prefer that, I've failed to get. The setting is certainly beneath what his own restaurants were. Must have to do with not having to displace the usual routine.

And the great thing about Ramsay is that it actually takes a while to realize this. Before you understand this, he comes off as a foul-mouthed bully. After, you really can appreciate the guy and even like him.

Sorry, I was thinking of Chef Academy with Jean Christophe Novelli. http://www.bravotv.com/chef-academy/season-1/about. I think it was a "one hit wonder." Definitely entertaining though!
