CSA 2011: Finally a week worth talking about!

by David M. Bueker » Sun Aug 14, 2011 5:42 pm

This week finally broke a long string of kale, cucumbers and green onions.

We received potatoes, tomatoes, onions, blueberries, plums and some lovely salad greens (plus another cucumber...). It's cool here today, so I am going to roast the potatoes and onions, have a big green salad with fresh tomato and call it a good day!

Does this mean you don't like cucumbers? If so, I'd missed that.

Maybe they remind him of Sauvignon Blanc?

It seems that most of the US produce, was late this year. Our Farmer's Markets are finally caught up and we are enjoying everything. Peaches are big right now and so sweet. All the berries are still with us, as well. A new grower, only grows heirloom tomatoes and has them in single layers in boxes. He knows his stuff and even takes the time to tell folks, use this one for your hamburgers, this one for your chicken sandwiches, etc. I love to listen because I had no idea that, like wine, I would choose my tomato for a specific food match. I generally go by color and what color I would like with the dish. He is a cute, young man, very personable, but folks tend to be shy about heirlooms....maybe because they are $3.50 a pound? A bit over the top, I think, but they are lasting me the entire week on the counter, and I adore the colors and fabulous taste.

OK, I cannot let this pass, have to share. The Farmer's Market now accepts EBT, so there are many welfare recipients on Saturday's. Last week, I watched a couple who had 60 cents left to spend. They stood in the booth, looking at everything. She picked up a large, beautiful green bell pepper (3 or $1) and asked the Asian grower, "will you take 60 Cents for this?" Does this give anyone a clue as to why some folks are on EBT? Then she asked, "are these good? I have never had one before." I wanted to intervene, so badly but decided to keep to myself, because the fellow with her was a very huge man, and not too receptive to his lady. Is there no program to educate folks about foods to buy, how to cook them? I bet that bell pepper goes to waste.

I eat cucumbers (and make refrigerator pickles), but there comes a point where a human should only have to consume so many.

One can only hope...

(I hate, despise, loathe, detest, etc. green bell peppers.)

Just grate them into a raita with some carrot and a few spices!
