Gravenstein

by John Treder » Sat Aug 13, 2011 10:48 pm

I went to the apple fair in Sebastopol this morning and toted home (with the help of my car "Toy") a 20# box of Gravensteins. At $1/lb at the booth, plus the $10 entry to the fair (which is the usual booths deal, plus some fairly good music if you count by dB, and a few local homemade booths which are always more interesting to me. Even discounting the booths, $1.50/lb is a good price for apples this good.

Pie tomorrow.

Oh, BTW, I picked The Apple of my Tree today. I'm attaching a couple of pix. It's a "Red Gravenstein" and it's supposed to be that color - they had some at the fair.

Didn't even know a red gravenstein existed. But how special and sweet to get a single perfect apple when you expected none at all. Can I guess--best apple you ever ate?

Yep, Gravensteins are in, at last!
And it was indeed delicious! Tart, crisp and full of flavor.

The trouble with Gravensteins is that they don't travel well. From the time they are picked to when you eat one it has to be a much shorter time than with many other types of apples or they just don't taste that good. IMHO.

That's true. They have a short season, they don't keep well and they don't travel well. But if you're fortunate enough to live where they are, they're apple heaven!
