Little lime on your melon?

by Robin Garr » Tue Aug 09, 2011 9:08 pm

This seems almost too simple to mention, yet it was a delicious discovery. When we went to Sunday brunch at a local favorite, Majid's, the brunch menu items all came with a simple but pretty fruit cup: Balls of cantaloupe, honeydew and watermelon colorfully arranged in a wine glass with blueberries, and a wedge of lime stuck on the edge of the glass.

Without even really thinking about it, I took the lime and squeezed it over the fruit.

WHOA!

The tart, fresh lime juice did amazing things to the melon balls. They would have been good on their own, chilled and fresh. But the cleansing tart lime juice kicked the melon flavor up a notch, it really did. I'm wanting a chunk of melon with lime squeezed on it right now, just from thinking about it. 8)

Robin, very reminiscent of the Pacific Islands where it is common to serve papaya(pawpaw) with limen cheeks. Simple but delicious ala your melons.

I have never squeezed lime over melon but will do so this weekend. Beautiful picture, too! Thanks, Robin.

Great pic, RG.

Love the effect of lime on most things. Definitely perks and pops flavors out with the bright acidity and fruit combo. Add just a touch of fresh ground black pepper to that, and I'd be in gustatory heaven.

I'm with you! Other high-acid, sweet citrus like tangerines do this job wonderfully as well.

Lime on melon is great. Also, try a wee scrape of freshly-ground black pepper on cantaloupe. Yum!

Me too. Although for whatever reason I never used it on melon. Will have to try it today, we certainly have melons in the house.

With the development of a large Korean population nearby, and then Korean groceries, I discovered Korean melons, which are lovely little things about the size of a soft-ball, or a bit bigger than that. A quarter melon is about right for a light dessert. Mild flavor between cantaloupe and honeydew. Will definitely try these with lime juice...
